Citrus salad

Have you noticed the incredible variety of citrus on display these days? I can’t keep up! Tangelos, Pummelos, Navel, Seville, Honey tangerines, Valencia, Satsuma, Moro, Cara Cara and more; I know people who have serious cravings for a rack of ribs, but when I have a serious craving it is usually for something citrusy. Why do we crave certain things? What do you crave?

Oranges, for instance, remind me of a history teacher during my last year of high school that I spent  in France. Madame Lecoq was an intense and stern woman who was admonishing us; ” Do you (spoiled) kids realize that in France after World War II, we would get oranges only once a year and it was only for Christmas?” France and all of Europe were hurting badly after the war and getting oranges was a very special thing. Can you imagine giving your kids two oranges as a Christmas present?

In Lebanon, on the other end of the mediterranean, my cousin and I would eat a lemon as a snack! We’d cut it into quarters, sprinkle it with salt and eat the whole thing (less the peel).  No kidding. I can still remember that delightful sensation of intense sourness dampened a bit by the salt. Fun!


This is a Moroccan salad or dessert. Just oranges with a few tablespoons  of  powdered sugar, a sprinkling of  orange blossom  water and a dash of cinnamon. I could not resist adding  blood oranges, tangerines  and a grapefruit.

    Beautiful! My memory of oranges is associated with sunny winter afternoons in North India – we usually don’t have central heating in homes, so everyone comes out to sit in parks to get warm in the sun. And snack on oranges and peanuts. Warm sunny afternoons with the citrus-aroma of orange peels, mmmm :)

    I love this salad loaded with citrus yum, I can’t imagine not having access to citrus. we are truly lucky. My hubby loves to eat lemons with salt..

    I’ve become addicted to putting orange flavor in all of my vanilla desserts. Somehow that combination has totally hooked me.

    That salad looks amazing! A blend of all of the season’s best citrus.

    That’s such a beautiful orange salad. Love the combination of colours. I have not seen blood orange yet. Wonder how it tastes like.

    I have seen a similar recipe in a Moroccan cookbook I have but have never tried it. I should though. It looks so colorful. Plus oranges are plentiful now, as you mentioned.

    This looks wonderful. We’re big fans of citrus here in the Fearless household, so we’ll definitely be trying this sometime soon. (I also want to try your lemon snack. I know my husband will love it!)

    Same here, I mean until early 50s oranges were a delicacy and given as gifts during Christmas.
    And I love the appearance and flavor of sweet or savory orange salads.

    I love the vibrant colors in this stunning salad! It looks so pretty arranged on the plate — almost like a flower in bloom! I sometimes crave citrus too…and green salads a lot of the time.
