Chocolate fondue

I tend to mentally divide people into two categories: The pack rats and the minimalists. I belong to the second category, I like to get rid of stuff, especially if I see that it has been taken up space and not been used. One friend, the owner of 200 pairs of flip-flops, once quipped: “So, Joumana, are you getting rid of your beds now?”.

The problem is I end up regretting  giving away  some things, like the fondue pot I had on a shelf for years and decided I needed this week-end.

What about you? Are you a pack rat or a minimalist?

INGREDIENTS:

  • 6 ounces of whipping cream
  • 12 ounces of chocolate of your choice (I used dark)
  • 1 small chili pepper or a dash of hot Aleppo pepper
  • fruits for the sticks: prunes, kumquats, bananas

If I was watching the Super Bowl, that is exactly what I would want to munch on after eating the savory stuff; especially if my team was losing!

METHOD:

  1. Place the cream in a saucepan and bring to boil; place a chili pepper (if dried, let the seeds out into the cream) in the cream as well. If using hot Aleppo pepper, sprinkle on the cream.
  2. When the cream is near boiling, remove from the heat and strain.
  3. Place all the chocolate, cut into small pieces, into the cream. Stir to melt the chocolate and combine the cream and chocolate. When the chocolate and cream are smooth, pour into (preferably) a fondue pot set over a small flame.
  4. Arrange sticks of fruits all around. Serve.

Minimalist for sure, cant stand extra useless stuff. Yummy for the fondue!

Pack rat, I guess. Good thing it’s only for a select few categories of items. There are lots of things I don’t care much about, so I don’t have a problem getting rid of those!

Super decadent! I love the addition of chile pepper, so nice!

Wow! I was planning to do choc fondue post as well :) How awesome does this look. And oh I’m exactly like you – minimalist who regrets later. But I’m minimalist only about food and clothes. Not so much about kitchen accessories. I’m way too attached to them.

I am a little bit of both. Somethings I get rid very easily and others I keep for ever. I love fondue both types the savory and the sweet. This looks totally decadent!

By nature pack rat, forced by moving to be minimalist, and I am not looking back.

Your fondue looks great as is, and actually since you have no fondue pot, you’ll have excuses to eat the whole thing quickly.

So simple and neat! And the pictures – I could eat my monitor :-) !

Hello! My husband is a chocolate lover – he eats chocolate everyday. Two years ago he was offered chocolate fondue bowl, but so fas he has never used that. However, I would try your fondue with pleasure.

The aphrodisiac chocolate. This pepper kissed fondue is the perfect finale for a romantic evening. Studies show that dark chocolate increases blood flow to the brain which improves attention span, and mood.
Joumana, I too belong to minimalist category, when It comes to my collection of Christian Louboutin, I lean a little towards the pack rats.

minimalist but my husband is a real pack rat! this fondue looks absolutely delicious! lovely recipe!

My children bought me a chocolate fondue fountain for a Christmas present a couple of years ago and took it back to exchange it with something more useful :) I don’t think I would make a fondue more than once every year but I do tend to keep things that have sentimental value.

I am a minimilist…my kids are furious with me. One of them said I dumped a fortune in baseball cards (and BTW, he adds, where are my tennis trophies?) another said I dumped all her old school sweaters (but she did take all my old evening gowns). I live in an apt now. Not enough space, although I saved all their 45′s , cassettes and LP’s. I also gave away my slow cooker. A mistake. A fondue pot, I have. How odd it that? My son’s favorite thing to eat used to be beef fondue.

I could dive into that chocolate – love the spicy pepper to add depth. That dark mass beckons. And I keep the fondue pot around for just such chocolate or cheese emergencies. I tend to be a minimalist who lives with pack rats. Sigh.

I’m trying to go from Rat Pack to Minimalist but I have a long way to go :)

This looks wonderful and what a great idea to add some heat to the chocolate with red pepper!

  27. Posted February 7, 2011 at 12:51 am | Permalink

Hmmm, I guess I lean slightly more towards the hoarder state of living, although as I move house every couple of years this is a good opportunity to throw away a lot of things, and then I have no mercy!

Looks delicious, though somehow I’ve never owned a fondue set. I a not sure how I’ve managed to get this far through life without receiving one (probably regifted).

Love the photos! Look at all that chocolate!

  29. Posted February 7, 2011 at 10:31 am | Permalink

I guess I am a little of both. I try hard not to buy/accumulate things, but the things I do get, I tend to hang on to. Part of it is that I don’t want it going to a landfill! I would rather give things away than throw them.

Love the addition of aleppo to the fondue! What is better than melted chocolate?

I admire people that can be minimalist, but I’m most definitely a pack rat. I inherited it from my mother’s side of the family.

It’s interesting that fondue pots are making a comeback. When we got married 40 something years ago we received three as wedding presents. Of course they’ve all gone the ways of garage sales. Now I wish I had them back.

I am absolutely a minimalist in every aspect except my kitchen tools…I can’t help my hoarding obession with utensils/gadgets/plates/etc. :) Love the chocolate fondue, it would be an especially fantastic dessert for upcoming Valentine’s!

I tend to be a pack rat, but every spring go through a major purge of junk I no longer need. I have almost given away my fondue pot MANY times, thank goodness I still have it so that I can make this delicious recipe! – S

  39. Posted February 7, 2011 at 10:49 pm | Permalink

A mixture of both, I think. In certain areas of life, I can take having things that I use twice a year. Others, I get anxious to declutter often.

  40. Posted February 8, 2011 at 2:32 am | Permalink

So exotic! Love the pepper and how you’re dipping kumquats. Yum!

  41. Posted February 8, 2011 at 2:11 pm | Permalink

    Stunning photos Joumana ;o)

I’m certainly not one to ever refuse a great set up like your fondue dish and unique fruits.
I’m actually due to make one soon also.

Btw…I consider myself a semi-minimalist…however, Hubby doesn’t seem to agree.

    Flavourful wishes,

I am a pack rat and trying to clear out my second bedroom, and I just can’t get the job done! I tell you it’s an affliction! Making this fondue sounds like a good excuse to avoid working on the room!

Desserts are my favourite category :D . I can’t believe your friend owns 200 pairs of flipflops! I thought I was a pack rat but I’m not quite as bad! Fondue looks like pure indulgence! Love it with strawberries.
