Goat cheese homemade in a jiffy

Let’s say you want to have some goat cheese but you don’t want to buy some already made; here is an easy and delicious solution. No need for rennet tablets or any special equipment.

Grab a jar of goat yogurt at the store, dump the contents either in a muslin bag or on a large sieve lined with paper towels or a coffee filter, cover it loosely with some plastic wrap and place in the fridge. The next day, the goat yogurt will drain all of its whey and you will have some fresh goat cheese. Salt it to taste, swirl some good olive oil on top and enjoy with your favorite loaf of bread.

NOTE: What do you do with the leftover whey? For some ideas, click here.

I made soft cheese from yoghurt a couple of times last year, but just used cow’s milk and sheep’s milk yoghurt. The recipe I used said to mix some salt through. I didn’t like the sheep’s milk cheese made this way (I am normally happy with sheep’s milk cheese, although it often is a more unusual taste), but the cow’s milk one was great. I’ll have to try it with goat’s milk as well, although goat yoghurt is very difficult to find in Australia. Goat’s cheese is very popular, and we have small amounts of goat milk, but very little yoghurt for some reason.

@Louise: You can make your own goat yogurt easily enough with goat milk. I will post on it soon.

What a great idea – it’s been a long time since I’ve made yogurt cheese, but I always love it – how nice to have fresh goat cheese so quickly!

I’ve already done this and it is truly delicious, much better than any store bought stuff… however I thought I was making labneh. Is labneh something different for you? Do you make it at home? Thanks!

I’ve made goat labneh and love it. I’ll be researching the whey recipes with interest because a lot of whey comes of the only brand of goat yoghurt available locally.
Another great kitchen idea from a super blog.

Looks delicious! We have been making our own goat cheese for some time now. Its so easy and tastes so much better than the kind we buy at the store. Have you ever tried to make the “harder” cheeses, like cheddar or gouda?

I’ve used a similar method and been really happy with the result. I love goat cheese!

What a great idea. I love goat cheese and it would be fun to make my own. Not sure if I can find goat cheese yogurt here. (One of the downfalls of living in small town America.) I’ll put it on my “city” list. This is a definitely try.

I tried this a while back with normal yogurt and made cream cheese. It was so simple yet so satisfying. The goat version must be even better.

I wish I liked goat cheese! There are so many wonderful recipes using it. I even love Stilton. I’d love to try this with cow’s milk yogurt though.

OMG, I’ve got some of this in the fridge right now. I have been doing it for a couple years and it is perfect, esp for my one child (and myself) who have trouble with cow’s milk. I love to keep it in a jar with some fresh herbs mixed right in. Thanks for bringing up the whey, I’m embarrassed to say that I’ve only tossed it in the past. That’s going to change now because of you! Thanks :)

I am in love with this post. I shall keep goat’s milk yogurt in the fridge during winter months guaranteeing that I will never run out of goat cheese! And never need to risk my life in a blizzard as I go to the grocers for a goat cheese “fix.”

I grabbed some goat’s milk yogurt from the “health food” dairy cooler at the local supermarket this afternoon, and now I have a bag of it dripping away in the fridge! Can’t wait to try it with some delicious bread from the farmer’s market tomorrow!

Hi! I’ve been reading your yummy blog for a while now…
Someone told me his brother drank whey and it melted away his kidney stones, I wonder if it’s true. Anyway, I always pour my labaneh whey into the plants. It hasn’t killed them so far :)
