Tahini-Nutella (Tanella)

Nutella is sickeningly sweet, yet people love it and children adore it; fine! I am making a Tanella (not too sweet, creamy, nutty-tasting, smooth, luscious).

I am substituting tahini for hazelnut paste and making a homemade version that is stored in a jar in the fridge and can be used on bread or plain cookies or on a crêpe.

We used to eat baguettes filled with Nutella when we lived in France, as a snack after school; this Tanella was made for my daughter and her friends who like to drop by after 4 PM  and hang out.

Time required to make this Tahini-Nutella: 5 minutes

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 Bar of Dark chocolate (100 g or 3 1/2 ounces)
  • 1 Bar of Milk chocolate (100 g or 3 1/2 ounces)
  • 7 Tablespoons of butter (if unsalted, add a pinch of salt)(100 g)
  • 1 14-oz can of sweetened concentrated milk (around 20 cl): don’t use the entire can, leave 2 ounces in the can.
  • 1/2 cup (or more,  to taste) of Tahini

METHOD:

  1. Break the chocolate in squares and place in a bowl; add the butter, cut in small chunks; microwave for one minute; use a spoon to stir the residual chocolate and butter until are all melted and smooth.
  2. Add the sweetened concentrated milk and stir till mixed.
  3. Place the mixture in a food processor and add the tahini; process for a minute or so, until the mixture is smooth and shiny. Taste and adjust, adding more tahini, one tablespoon at a time, if you like a nuttier tasting spread.
  4. Pour in a jar, close and store  in the lower part of the fridge. Remove from the fridge an hour before using to get it back at room temperature. Use on toast, bread, crêpes, or whatever else your little heart desires.

I used as a template for the recipe a recipe for a pâte à tartiner from C’est Moi qui l’ai fait.

My mister is allergic to hazelnut, but laments on Nutella and it’s loveliness often. I already phoned him about this recipe, we are definitely going to try making a batch.

I will be buying tahini soon and this is great. I have never eaten Nutella and don’t think I would like the sweetness. This sounds great.

Well..this is indeed lovely. Gorgeous shots as always dear!I will be sure to refer this to dear friend cause she, her hubby and son don’t eat anything processed. So she only wonders what a Nutella tastes like. I myself have found one link that makes homemade Nutella that I am going to try for a Vegan friend with some appropriate substitutions ofcourse!

Ohhh this is ingenious and suitable for someone with an allergy to nuts. Great for everybody. As a mom with a son with an allergy I always appreciate recipes that can be shared without worrying.

What a fabulous idea!!! I love Nutella so very much, but this sounds fascinating to me. :-) I lived in Portugal as a nanny to two little German boys, and they would eat this for breakfast every single day. :-)

Fantastic idea – why hadn’t I thought of that before? As much as I like Nutella, I prefer your version.

Good idea to tone down the nutella using tahini – plus a deeper profile of overall nutty taste too :)

  25. Posted May 19, 2010 at 3:22 am | Permalink

i like to see tahini used for more than just hummus, particularly if chocolate is also involved. although i in no way find nutella sickening, i’d love your version as well. :)

  26. Posted May 19, 2010 at 3:26 am | Permalink

An excellent idea, irresistible! I love tahini, especially with chocolate ;-)

I make a similar thing for my kids, with unsweetened cocoa, tahini, almond butter and agave syrup! It’s much healthier than real Nutella and I agree with you, the real thing is just too sweet…

This glossy goodness of chocolate oozing from the warm ciabatta bread is heavenly, I also like to add sliced strawberries on top, this is my personal taste. Dark chocolate has loads of nutrition, so you feel good about eating it. tahini on the other hand has a lot of zinc and is potent antioxidant cleanser.

  36. Posted May 19, 2010 at 11:10 am | Permalink

I am making this – tonight! I do love nutella, but you’re right that it’s often a bit too sweet. But this sounds amazing! And I believe that tahini should be in just about everything!

    bonne soirée

I could never figure out why the Lebanese are so nuts about Nutella. It is grossly sweet.

I do admit that Nutella brownies are deelish.

  39. Posted May 19, 2010 at 4:34 pm | Permalink

I am always amazed that Nutella is fed to young children for breakfast , lunch, after school – all over Europe… it seems to be considered a nutritious snack… which is very funny when you look at the amount of sugar that is usually in it. I agree with you. The tahini version looks like “real” nutella! :)
    hahaha

This is genius – I love nutella, but do find it too sweet so add it in moderation. My Persian friend introduced me to tahini and fresh dates, so good, so I can only guess how yummy your version is as well.

Nutella made with tahini…what a great idea! Much either than trying to grind up whole hazelnuts.
